The way we work

"The way we work", Rio Tinto’s global code of conduct, was relaunched on 9 December 2009. The new edition supersedes business unit codes of conduct and establishes a common Group wide code.

The way we work is one of the Group’s core documents and provides employees with guidance on how to conduct themselves at work and when representing Rio Tinto. It has been translated into nearly 20 languages to remove barriers to understanding. The 2009 edition is more detailed than the previous 2003 version and covers more Group policies. This recognises the significant change experienced by Rio Tinto over the past six years.

Roll out of the new edition includes issuing a managers’ pack to help leaders introduce The way we work to employees. A poster campaign is being mounted in offices and plants to show case studies of how our values are already thriving in our organisation. The publicity is intended to encourage employees not only to read The way we work, but to reflect on how the principles relate to their work duties so that they continue to meet the high standards expected.
